Correspondence, accounts, and commercial and other papers, relating chiefly to Arnold's pre-Revolutionary mercantile interests in New Haven, Conn., where he worked as a bookseller and pharmacist and was active in the West Indies trade; pharmaceutical recipes; waste book (1773-1780), including accounts from his years in Philadelphia, Pa.; inventories (1781-1786) of Arnold's confiscated estates in New Haven and Philadelphia; miscellaneous military papers, including letters; diary (1775) of Samuel Barney, kept in Maine during Arnold's expedition against Quebec; and other papers relating to Arnold.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
